The Elusive Meaning of Courtship

We can confidently say that, right now, the Christian homeschooling community is by and large actually “doing courtship” as a community-wide phenomenon. It’s great to see a community of Christians committed to following Biblical principles of purity in the relationships leading to marriage. But on the other hand, the “courtship” idea means something a little bit different to each person who you talk to. There’s confusion about what it really means. Is it arranged marriage, like Yenta in Fiddler on the Roof? Is it parent-supervised dating? Homeschooled kids don’t pick up a “balanced” view by osmosis, and just waiting to think about the issue when they’re ready to get married is often disconcerting for parents, sons, and daughters, as they try to figure out what they’re actually going to do about it.

One of the best ways to be prepared for what is ahead is for parents and children to watch or listen to some of the messages on Biblical principles of courtship together and to discuss them. The first challenge is to get the kids to understand what courtship is really about, and why courtship is right, so that they have this in mind before the big choices start to come.

We’ve gathered resources for doing this from a number of sources; they all have something different to share. Some of the best have been from our dear friends Little Bear Wheeler, Pastor S.M. Davis, and the Mally family. Be sure to check out the links to their products. They are 100% worth your while.
